After being capped to prevent evaporation, the sample was allowed to sit at room temperature for an additional  hours. Subsequently, sample B was removed from the bath and treated identically to sample A. Waterlogged wood sample C was dehydrated using a series of acetone baths that were placed in a freezer-mounted vacuum chamber as a means of determining if the combination of low temperature and vacuum had a significant effect on the dehydration process. Sample C was placed into  ml of fresh acetone and placed into the freezermounted vacuum chamber, where it remained under a vacuum of  Torr for  hours.

As formidable as the task may be, however, the introduction of a stabilizing and consolidating agent is necessary to prevent exfoliation that occurs with the separation of the outer zone of wood from the denser interior. Passivation Polymers seem to effectively prevent this problem. The use of silicone preservation technologies also allows the conservator to better control the strength, flexibility, exterior finish, and color when treating waterlogged or severely desiccated wood. As with polyethylene glycol, Passivation Polymers can be blended to accentuate structural and aesthetic qualities that the conservator may wish to apply to archaeological wood.

The towel served to form an airspace around the artifacts. A second piece of crumpled paper, containing  cc of CT-, was then placed into the bag (fig. ). Once sealed, the bag was placed into a warming oven preset at ˚C. After  hours of catalyzation, the paper containing the used catalyst was replaced with a new ball of paper containing  cc of fresh CT-. The bag was resealed and returned to the warming oven for an additional  hours. Care must be taken to ensure that paper containing the CT- catalyst does not come into direct contact with any artifacts during catalyzation.
