Synopsis of the Vandermeulen Findings At the time of anesthetic administration, 42 of 61 (69%) of the patients developing a spinal hematoma had impaired coagulation. In 25 of the cases, some form of heparin therapy was implicated. In addition, five of the patients had undergone a major vascular procedure in which heparin was likely used, but its use was not reported on their anesthetic record. The remaining 12 patients had a variety of conditions that could have altered their coagulation profile.
