It was designed to run through all the various possibilities of wheel settings at high speed in order to see if the suspected piece of plaintext appeared in the message. The codebreakers provided the operators with a ‘menu’ suggesting possible equations of clear letters to enciphered letters, which was fed into the Bombe. Each time the machine found a possible match, it was quickly tested on a replica Enigma machine to see if it produced German text. If it did, it was passed on for decryption. The first Bombe, christened ‘Victory’, was installed in March 1940 in part of Hut 1, the other end of the hut being the station sick bay.

At one end of what would eventually become something of a production line was Bletchley Park Control, which was initially staffed by begging and borrowing the brightest young men from the top London banks. Control was to be manned 24 hours a day and in constant touch with the intercept sites to ensure that their coverage of radio frequencies and networks was coordinated and that as little as possible was missed. Where an important station was difficult to hear, it was to be ‘doublebanked’, taken by two different operators, normally at different stations, so that the chances of picking up a false letter that might throw a spanner into the works were cut down.
