According to Lowe and Rüdig (1986, 537) green politics has a peculiar inclusiveness and exclusiveness. It can accommodate other radical movements while resisting assimilation into their ideological agendas. I suggest that the three factors I have highlighted account in large part for this property. It should be noted though that the claims to universalism offered by the green movement and its critique of western society – however coherent in principle – are in practice limited.
