This would take account of opportunities to develop tourism, wildlife and fisheries management, rattan plantations and new forest crops, and allow for low-impact logging and plantations of indigenous tree species in suitable areas (Caldecott, 1988e). The aims of this proposal were similar to those of the proposed Baram Hinterland Feasibility Study which had been considered and shelved by the State Government in October 1984. This earlier proposal was presumed to have been unsuccessful because of the increasing sensitivity of land planning issues in the Baram.

The 12 Designing conservation projects main study area covered at first some 8000 km2 of the upper Baram, but was later extended to other areas. Rural people were interviewed collectively at 220 longhouses, taking advantage of the architecture, which made it easy to gather people together for meetings. People were also questioned individually concerning nearly 1000 hunting excursions representing a total of more than two person-years of hunting effort.
