I recognize that you may be unsure about how much time your child actually spends in school each day. Some parents are very familiar with their child's daily attendance because they try to take their child to school each day and see the problems that occur. Other parents are less sure about their child's actual attendance because the child tries to hide behaviors such as skipping classes or ditching school early.

For example, if a child is distressed about school because a bully is threatening her, then the distress is understandable and the threat must be resolved before any of the methods in this book are used (see chapter i). In addition, your child's distress should be much worse than what is seen for most kids of her age. Compare your child to other kids of her age and see whether her distress about school is much worse than theirs. If so, then the methods in this book will be more helpful. I am referring to children who are truly distressed about school and who have trouble going to school even though there is no real reason to feel distressed.

For example, if your child is distressed only by having to ride the school bus, then provide a distress rating for the bus ride each day. You may also be asking: How can I know what my child's level of distress is during the school day?
