During my first years on television, I made the mistake of asking why I didn’t have to belong to the union. I innocently thought everyone on television did. The comeback was creative. I was told that a wrestling event came under a special aftra provision allowing a sporting event (which pro wrestling is not) that is broadcast live (which we weren’t) to be exempt from union supervision. While I knew better, I kept my mouth shut and pretended to accept this ludicrous explanation. Those who worked for the McMahons sensed that anyone who challenged the system would quickly be replaced.
Anyway, I accepted such periodic pranks as my rite of passage into the wrestling fraternity. I was receiving an elementary education in Wrestling Subculture 101 and I didn’t have a clue. Every month when I asked Monsoon for the dates of my future bookings, he cautiously wrapped his oversized date ledger around his head, partly because he suffered from poor vision, and partly to keep the information it contained hidden from me. The large black book listed the dates, towns and matches for each night through the following month.
When he wrestled, he was uncontrollable. In the ’70s he never spoke English — he only bellowed and howled. George’s eyes darted from side to side as he erratically charged his opponent, the referee and the fans. After the Animal won the match, he comforted himself by shredding the corner turnbuckles with his teeth and proceeded to chew the foam padding. He appeared on the scene in June and disappeared in September because, oddly enough, he was a schoolteacher in the Detroit area. I wasn’t aware of this at the time.
