Chapter 2 looks at the Hospital’s organization and the conventual life of its brethren in England and Wales, and considers the admission and family background of brethren, the order’s career structure and the relationship between the prior of England and his brethren. It then moves on to the immediate context in which brethren operated—their conventual life, households and servants—before Chapter 3 analyses the administration of the order’s landed estates, the extent and sources of its income and the dispatch of responsions to Rhodes.
