Lars Lie was a temporarily appointed stipendiary magistrate when he and his wife, Caspara Fredrikke Gill, left H0land for Copenhagen in 1804, probably so that he could obtain a more remunerative position. By then, the couple had three sons to care for, but they took only the eldest son John with them to Copenhagen. The other two boys were left with relatives and "brave Peasants" in H0land.
