The Lord announced His name Jehovah to Moses for the first time in Exodus 6:3. He renewed His pledge to bring them forth from Egypt to the Promised Land. He also made the soon-to-be familiar proclamation: “I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the Lord your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians” (Exodus 6:7). The people would not listen to Moses because their spirits had been broken. God again ordered Moses to Pharaoh but Moses demurred.

Take your father and your households, and come unto me: and I will give you the good of the land of Egypt, and ye shall eat of the fat of the land” (Genesis 45:18). They traveled to Canaan to retrieve their father and his household. On the journey to Egypt, Jacob/ Israel stopped to offer sacrifice at Beer-sheba, where the Lord told him not to fear. “I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will surely bring thee up again” (Genesis 46:4). Seventy people traveled with Jacob/Israel to Egypt. He blessed Pharaoh upon their meeting and lived in Egypt seventeen years.

He gave Moses further instruction to declare to the Israelites that “The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations” (Exodus 3:15). Moses continued to vacilate, hesitant about accepting the mission. God gave him miraculous signs that he might use to convince the people and Pharaoh of his power. These included changing his staff into a snake and then back to a staff; turning his hand leprous white and then healing it; and pouring Nile water on the ground where it would turn to blood.
